Getting to know Kaori Okumura...
An interview with our designer
My name is Kaori Okumura. I am the founder of my knitwear
label "Kaori by Kaori Okumura".
Originally, I came to London to study Architecture.
However, since 2005, I have been creating and supplying my handmade knitwear to boutiques in London.
My style of knitting is rather unconventional. I do not use any needle or any hook.
Only exception is when I am making buttons or sewing on tags or care labels.
So how do I do it?
I use my bare fingers to knit.
Post 9/11 2001, bringing knitting needles had been banned on airline travel.
And I had a sister in California who I was on the way to visit.
A ball of yarn found its way in my hand luggage.
So I decided to experiment with my fingers to relieve the boredom.
And ever since I have never stopped.
Another unique thing about my knitwear is the way how they are produced.
My designs are knitted around the mannequin in order to mold to the 3D shape of the woman's body.
This is especially important for the female body, which has many curves.
I want to make my garments comfortable and complimentary.
But this would not be possible if I was working with flat patterns, which those conventional knitwear designs rely upon.
As the majority of knitwear on the present market are made by making the individual parts first.
They are then assembled using the normal clothes making process.
Jumpers, for example, are created as a flat 'T' shape.
The wearer's body is expected to create the shape for the jumper.
And all of the garments I produce is an intensively hand-labored which is very rare nowadays.
For A/W 2011, I experimented with a wider variates of styles and stitches.
I hope they will be enjoyable to anyone who owns this unique piece of knitwear.
Impressive New Designer Kaori Okumura for DiGuardo
The great peculiarity of Kaori is the creation of her handmade sweaters,
but hand it intends with her fingers!
What makes this lovely designer unique is the way in which all of the garments are constructed.
She has been developing the technique of fingers knitting/ finger crocheting since 2002.
By definition, Kaori only uses her fingers to create the knitwear. The only exception being when the
buttons and labels are sewn on.
Her creation are usually knitted around a mannequin in order to mold to the three dimensional shape of the human body; also very important for the female body, which has many curves.
In fact this makes all of her garments both comfortable and flattering.
She hopes her knitwear can give back the joy of owning something personal and unique to anyone who wears it.

Hetty Rose collection
Hetty Rose shoes collection had a great success at DiGuardo Boutique.
Ladies must have the lovely Kiki shoes!
Ladies must have the lovely Kiki shoes!
The Hetty Rose label makes shoes.
The collection is based on a theory of re-using and re-working vintage materials in a creative and sustainable way, hand making gorgeous, feminine shoes to fit.
These materials are primarily vintage Japanese kimono fabrics: relics of a disappearing world, saturated in significance and hidden meanings.
The colours and folds signify various seasons, occasion, status and personal taste of the wearer.
The designer hand selects the most exquisite antique fabrics to use as uppers for shoes to create unique handmade footwear.
The designs are simple, yet provocative, designed to make the foot appear more attractive. The collaboration of colours, materials, service and directional design result in unique, wearable footwear.

CHARLOTTE TAYLOR
Presenting you with the new season collection
Completely print focused. Inspired by colonial Africa.
For its third season, the label has been stripped bare – focusing on the essence behind the CHARLOTTE TAYLOR charm – the weird and wonderful, the deliciously tactile, the beautifully brave – the prints.
Past prints will carry over, with new colour-ways and designs holding hands to showcase a deluxe, delectable feast for the eye.
The prints envelop duvet-sized scarves, classic silk blouses and shirts and of course the celebrated CT head scarf.
Limited edition Wallpaper prints are also a new introduction – An army of Penguins to share your bathroom with should be an addition to any self-respecting individuals’ bucket list in the 21st Century!

Charlotte Taylor exploded into our senses at Vauxhall Fashion Scout back in early 2010.
This girl was all the things we’d set up Young British Designers to be.
She stood apart from the rest, she had an immediate “look” all of her own
that can sometimes take a designers so many years to achieve. If they’re lucky.
She had bravely set out on a journey where she bared her soul
to the world by virtue of her blog which was and is a frank and honest
account of what it’s like to be an emerging designer in the big, tough, gnarly world of fashion. She took her inspiration from trashy grannies, from soap operas,
from penguins, from characters glimpsed back at home on the Isle of Wight.
She set up her rail at the Freemasons Hall, Covent Garden

and with much trepidation stood back to see what the world and her dog made of her.
The world adored her. Her now signature yellow penguins on their cobalt
The world adored her. Her now signature yellow penguins on their cobalt
blue silk backgrounds caught the hearts and minds
of the press and the public alike. Within a very short time indeed this girl had amassed columns full of inches.
She could have been swallowed up. She could have been ‘guided’ into being what the fashion establishment wanted her to be. But Charlotte was always going to do it her way.
We met with her back in March and she -slightly nervously- showed us her new AW11 collection. She had created what she wanted to create. Focussing upon her love of print and colour, silk and contrast. We were just awestruck. We wanted it all. We ordered it all.
Glorious, glorious colours and prints that only the penguin lady could have imagined into existence. Lobsters and ants, elephants and robots, old penguins and new.

Joyous, exuberant, uplifting and fun.
Set against contrasting colours that explode into your senses with visual and almost oral delectation.
Much of it is online now (and selling fast) but there are even more delights to come.
This designer is a star. And she’s shooting towards the heavens.
Leaving a shower of beautiful, sparkling colour and joy wheresoever she goes.

Pastel colors, flower prints, a bit of black. The 'abat-jour' dress with 'roses fabric', inspired by the famous lamp takes us deep in a retro atmosphere.
